When Dr. Alice Estrella-Gemba says her apricot jam is homemade, she is not kidding. All produce is grown, tended and handpicked from the organic garden around her home in Anaheim near her office in the Disneyland resort area. Thanks to a bountiful harvest from each tree and plant, she has been able to share the wealth with family and friends."There's nothing like the experience of picking four kinds of grapes off their vines and tasting neither powdery stuff nor any chemicals as one enjoys these healthy bites," she says. For Dr. Estrella-Gemba, gardening offers enormous rewards not the least of which are the vegetables and fruits it produces. "It's very grounding and very therapeutic," she continues. "You experience the natural cycle of life when you have a garden."
Participating in the agriculture sustainability movement doesn't mean turning your entire yard over to rows of fruit trees and vegetables. Even a small herb garden grown in a clay pot qualifies. Or a cage of Roma tomatoes to use in fresh pasta sauce. "It's great to go out in the garden and pull something and cook it." says Dr. Estrella-Gemba, whose own year round crops include apricots, peaches, plums, three kinds of oranges, grape fruit, lemons, kam quats, avocados, strawberries, mission figs and exotic trees like juju bees, pomegranates, three kinds of guavas, a bay leaf tree, banana, as well as potatoes, and an assortment of magic herbs and spices. "Whenever friends drop by I always send them home with a basket of fresh produce or preserved fruits. The garden is a hearty way of sustaining friendships," she adds. Environmental sustainability refers to the idea of using natural resources in such a way that society's current needs can be met without compromising at least seven generations according to Native American belief.
